Steve DeFrank was trained as a painter at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore and the School of Visual Arts in New York. In painting he works with casein (milk-based, extremely difficult to work with I hear) and for the past eight years or so he's been working in lite brite. Agnes Scott is either getting the one above or its companion piece (hans) for the Hello, Liberty! opening on the 23rd in the Dalton Gallery, and senior studio art & art history majors are giving four-minute talks on the artists. Stressin', but excited. I love his work, he was my first pick. His paintings are gorgeous as well, and I get to interview him this week, and from what I hear he's a charmer. Ba-da!

The tide was going out, we put our things on the beach - phones, iPod, camera. I put the camera back and a huge wave came out of nowhere and bam everything was ruined, except for (somehow) my phone.

"The farm was founded in 1942 by two couples, Clarence and Florence Jordan and Martin and Mabel England, as a “demonstration plot for the Kingdom of God.” (Clarence Jordan) For them, this meant following the example of the first Christian communities as described in the Acts of the Apostles, amid the poverty and racism of the rural South. The name Koinonia is an ancient Greek word, used often in the New Testament, meaning deep fellowship. Koinonia members divested themselves of personal wealth and joined a "common purse" economic system. They envisioned an interracial community where blacks and whites could live and work together in a spirit of partnership."

Note - not really a commune anymore, as they have moved from a common purse system to paying the members (equally) a small salary. They process pecans and peanut brittle for income. This place is beautiful. Habitat for Humanity was started here and the first homes are right on the edges of the farm.

Clarence Jordan (founder's) shack, where he penned the Cotton Patch Gospels.

"Habitat World" in Americus. This is supposed to let visitors experience "generic poverty housing" of the world. A really bizarre concept.

Plains never got over Jimmy Carter, and Jimmy never got over Plains. He still lives there. I bet it's awkward, that town is obsessed with him.

I wish any of the pictures I had could show the texture of these bad boys. It's gross. I'm pretty happy with it - installation work is really weird for me.

Silkscreen, monoprint, freehand stitching
This is from a photo of a statue that's on the campus of Ashley Hall (where I went grades 1-10) and there's a copy of it at White Point Gardens, in downtown Charleston (you know, with the gazebo, and all the cannons, and the battery). This is the only one I was really finished with/happy about.

A linoleum cut of the Battery/Ft. Sumter. From memory, of course. This is only my second linocut, the first one I did four years ago and it was a ten-color mess. There was a second plate, but I cut too much where I didn't mean to. So here we have something simple, with tell-tale accidental scratched. Whoops.

Not done. There's another one of these I'm stitching text onto, but it wasn't done for the show so I threw this one at them. It's the big pink house on the Battery, flipped, from a photo I worked up with a Sharpie. Turned into a pretty decent screenprint, and looks pretty great on shirts, as well.
